Student Masterclass – Film Making

Cue the dramatic moustache twirl!

It’s time to roll back the clock more than 100 years to the age of Silent Movies — where villains tied maidens to railway tracks, heroes struck heroic poses, and acting subtlety was… well, illegal.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll step into the shoes (and exaggerated facial expressions) of early filmmakers. No microphones, no dialogue

— just pure eyebrow-arching, cape-swirling, hand-flailing magic!

Working in a small group, you’ll either:

Create a ‘classic’ silent movie:

  • Dream up a theme and cobble together a delightfully over-the-top script.
  • Shoot your own silent masterpiece using volunteer actors (encourage them to overact shamelessly — it’s practically a law).
  • Create those iconic ‘dialogue cards’ to tell your audience what your actors probably just said.

Or, you can generate a ‘modern-style’ silent movie:

·         Create a story that can be told just by subtle actions and reactions.

·         Rely on your visual elements to convey part/s of the storyline.

·         Select appropriate music to add to your story.

But wait, there’s more! Choose from an array of dramatic “mood music” tracks — jaunty piano, thunderous organ or subtle, emotional instrumental tracks that form part of your story.
